BRATISLAVA, September 25, (WEBNOVINY) – The airport Sliac near Banska Bystrica that re-launched civilian air travel on June 16 of this year after two-year reconstruction served 15,100 tourists during the summer charter season. Three airlines flew 52 times from Sliac airport to two destinations, Burgas in Bulgaria (42 flights) and Antalya in Turkey (10 flights). The airport operator told SITA that the Czech airline Travel Service operated 25 flights to both summer resorts from the Sliac airport. The company Bulgarian Airlines secured 19 flights and the local airline SAM Air flew eight times to Burgas. Based on the previous charter seasons, the airport estimated to serve this summer around 12,000 tourists. The executive director and BoD chairman Lubomir Krupar said that they are happy with the achieved results, which give a clear answer to the question of profitability of a small airport.

In 2008, the Sliac airport served 2,600 tourists while the figure was 6.700 in 2007 and 5,900 in 2008. The Sliac airport expects revenues of EUR 940,200 including subsidies and EUR 440,300 without them. Sales from civilian air transport are to achieve EUR 430,000. Costs are estimated at EUR 930,200 and thus the airport should close this year with a moderate profit of EUR 10,000, with subsidies.

Civilian air travel at Sliac airport was abandoned in early 2009 when reconstruction of the runway, air control tower and other facilities begun. The reconstruction cost over EUR 61 million: EUR 34 million was paid by Slovak MoD, EUR 27 million was paid by NATO. The airport operates military flights again since 2010.
