LEVOCA, January 27, (WEBNOVINY) — The town of Levoca is going to sue the Slovak Deaflympics Committee (SDV) and the company Prva Popradska Developerska in connection with unfinished construction of the ice stadium in Levoca, where curling contests were to be held within the 17th Winter Deaflympics. Levoca’s mayor Miroslav Vilkovsky reported to the International Deaflympics Committee about the unclear situation with preparations of the Deaflympics in Slovakia already in September of last year. Thus far, the town has not received an answer. Vilkovsky remarked that it is interesting that the International Deaflympics Committee has not responded to the town. The mayor is surprised to see people walking freely who convinced Levoca’s council deputies to support the reconstruction of the stadium, which left the facility in ruins.

Levoca launched reconstruction of its stadium for the Deaflympics based on promises from the SDV and Prva Popradska Developerska. It has not yet received any money for the work carried out. The town’s mayor thinks that the Deaflympics will not be held in Slovakia as planned, on February 18-26, because the sporting venues are not ready. “It will be a massive disgrace for Slovakia,” he said. The contractor of the works on stadiums in Levoca and Kezmarok interrupted work on August 13 of last year until invoices for carried out works will be settled.

Media in Slovakia link problems with the 17th Winter Deaflympics to a criminal case of misappropriation of EUR 1.6 million sponsorship funds from September 2008. One of the two suspects in the case is Jaromir Ruda, who claims to be the president of the Slovak Deaflympics Committee. The court in Banska Bystrica had to adjourn the case repeatedly.
