BRATISLAVA, August 30, (WEBNOVINY) — Within four months, the new government in Slovakia managed to approve fourteen laws that represent a significant harm to the business environment, opposition SaS members told a press conference on Thursday. “Changes to the Labor Code, higher tax rates, and the postponement of the Unitas project mean worse conditions for employees, which means fewer jobs in the future,” warned ex-Economy Minister Juraj Miskov who brought a whip with him that he plans to use against “each minister of Fico’s Cabinet if s/he brings another piece of legislation harming the business environment.”

Ex-Labor Minister Jozef Mihal says that the proposed changes to the Labor Code, the amendment to the income tax law and the approved changes regarding social and health insurance levies will unfavorably hit all including small and big companies, sole proprietors and will also hamper the creation of new jobs. “And if any jobs originate in Slovakia, then only at trade union headquarters,” said Mihal. The proposed changes will not only curb flexibility of the job market but they also will bring inappropriate powers for trade unions of intervening in the management of firms and will mean disadvantages to contract agents. Moreover, the increase of the corporate income tax rate to 23 percent is the measure that might discourage new foreign investors from coming to Slovakia, warned Mihal.
