BRATISLAVA, April 14, (WEBNOVINY) — Former leader of the non-parliamentary Hungarian Coalition Party (SMK) Pal Csaky plans a return to the party leadership at the weekend. He resigned as party chairman after SMK failed to make it to parliament in elections in June 2010. “I thought last year that I will have a three-year break and now I have realized that this ruling coalition is strenuously working on its self-destruction and presently I cannot rule out early elections, either. Therefore, pressures on my return to SMK leadership are piling up because no one can claim with certainty that there won’t be early elections in a year or eighteen months,” Csaky confirmed his ambitions for SITA news agency.

Csaky is happy that the municipal elections confirmed the strength of SMK foundations. “On the other hand, we are a bit worried because the popularity of the party and support from people at the national level is not higher than nine months ago, in the parliamentary elections. A single thing comes out of this – a lot of work is ahead of us and we must involve more people in the party’s activities. We have to consider methods and forms of our work to regain the trust of people,” he remarked.

Csaky is aware of reserves in SMK and therefore some party members consider his return a good way to bolster the party’s activities. Csaky aspires to become a senior member of the party’s leadership again but he will not confirm or deny his candidacy for the top post before Saturday. He does not think that MOST-HID party founded by ex-SMK members is a successful arrangement. He said that some people that voted for MOST-HID told him that they have been disappointed by the party.

The SMK Party Congress will elect new leader on April 16 (Saturday) in Velky Meder. Csaky resigned from the top post after SMK’s flop in the parliamentary elections last year. Acting party leader Jozsef Berenyi plans to run for the post, too.
