European Commission Vice-President for Energy Union Maros Sefcovic prefers mutual solutions to sanctions on companies that participate in gas pipeline Nord Stream 2.

European Commission Vice-President for Energy Union Maros Sefcovic shows little enthusiasm about the plans of the United States to impose sanctions on companies that will participate in the gas pipeline Nord Stream 2. Sefcovic told the new agency SITA that these sanctions may eventually reduce EU’s energy security. “We prefer coordination of the steps between the partners and allies like the EU and the United States who seek mutual solutions to unilateral sanctions. Close cooperation is really important if the measures have an impact on one of the parties. Moreover, there are grounded concerns that sanctions, depending on their extent, may have an unfavorable impact on EU’s energy security,“ said Sefcovic. Sefcovic has been aware for some time that the planned gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 has a political aspect and polarizes the EU. At the end of the day, this project may, in his opinion, have negative impacts on Slovakia’s energy safety.
