BRATISLAVA, November 2, (WEBNOVINY) — The ruling coalition partners do not have a joint candidate for the post of prosecutor general. Leaders of the four center-left governing coalition parties the SDKU-DS, SaS, KDH and MOST-HID did not agree upon one name at Tuesday’s Coalition Council meeting. In the first round of the elections in parliament, each party will support its own candidate in the secret ballot that will take place on Wednesday.

Candidates for the new prosecutor general are Eva Misikova, a joint candidate of the SaS, MOST-HID and KDH parties, who is currently a prosecutor serving at the Office of the Prosecutor General, SDKU-DS candidate Jan Hrivnak, currently a prosecutor at the Office of the Special Prosecution, and incumbent Prosecutor General Dobroslav Trnka, proposed by SDKU-DS’s deputy Stanislav Janis and an MP for the strongest opposition party SMER-SD, as well.

Prime Minister Iveta Radicova commented after the meeting of the coalition party leaders that based on the result of the first round of the elections, the coalition deputy factions will meet, and if needed also the Coalition Council. The coalition parties have agreed that a change on the post of prosecutor general is needed. They will not support the candidacy of Dobroslav Trnka. Radicova explained that the government’s program statement talks about steps leading to improvement of enforceability of the law and of trustworthiness in the judiciary. The office of prosecutor general is included, which will involve systemic and personnel changes.
