Slovak Diplomat to Lead UN Economic and Social Council

BRATISLAVA, January 11, (WEBNOVINY) — The UN Economic and Social Council will be led by a Slovak diplomat for the first time since its inception. On January 10, members of the Council elected by acclamation Slovakia’s permanent envoy to the UN in New York Milos Koterec to be their president. The newly elected head of the council presented his priorities in a speech after the election.

Koterec plans to focus on building a globally effective development architecture and strengthening of cooperation with other global and regional institutions and organizations including the IMF and the World Bank. Special attention will be dedicated to the council’s active engagement in the preparations for the UN’s conference on Sustainable Development, Rio+20 and the implementation of its conclusions. The annual session of the UN Economic and Social Council that will be held in New York in July will be dedicated to employment support, fight against poverty and sustainable development related to the Millennium Development Goals.
