BRATISLAVA, May 9, (WEBNOVINY) — General Tibor Gaspar, who just a few days ago was appointed the head of the police anti-corruption unit, will be the new police president. He is to take over the post next week, replacing incumbent head of the Police Corps Jaroslav Spisiak. Interior Minister Robert Kalinak announced his decision on Wednesday.

After a discussion of his original candidate for the top police post, ex-police vice president Stanislav Jankovic, the minister thinks that the Police Corps or Jankovic himself would become the target of ungrounded criticism if he was appointed to the top post. “Many questions in his case have been already answered. Also in the future his services are irreplaceable for me. I will want to cooperate with him since we have many difficult projects,” said the minister adding that at stake is also the reevaluation of Slovakia’s Schengen readiness. “We have agreed that the pressure expected from the media is not the best beginning for the new police management at this moment,” Kalinak said.

The minister thinks that Jankovic is a marvelous police officer who did a lot of work. However he underscored that the police need first of all space for calm work and therefore the decision is that Tibor Gaspar will be the president of the Police Corps. He denied that the bad result of Jankovic’ lie detector test might be behind his decision. “He told the truth. However, the current hysteria would not help a good beginning,” the minister said.

Jankovic is believed to have arranged returning a driving license to a businessman, after it was seized because of speeding. Yet, his criminal prosecution in the case was halted recently.
